Of course, if Googles goal is longer term, its possible that this isnt such a crazy deal. Already, weve seen that this acquisition alone has been a key driving force in getting lots of people and especially the press to admit that the patent system is clearly broken. Spending that much to get that kind of widespread awareness may be worth if it leads to real reform which is still a big question mark. On top of that, if the quantity of patents has a deterrent value, no matter the quality of the overall bunch, its likely that Google will still find it worth it. However, the fact that it now needs to maintain these 17, 000 patents, where approximately half may have no direct commercial value, really demonstrates yet again the massive tax of bad patents on companies. The famous experiment by Ivan Pavlov, which demonstrated classical conditioning, involved ringing a bell every time a dog was served food, and noting that after a few times of this, the dog associated the bell with food and salivated when the bell was rung. Weve accidentally run a nearly identical experiment at home with my own dog, who is quite calm most of the time but barks whenever someone she doesnt recognize approaches our door. Since many of those people ring the doorbell, she now associates the doorbell with time to bark. And shell do so even if shes standing outside with me, with the door wide open, when I ring the doorbell. But, of course, dogs arent the only ones subject to Pavlovian responses. A somewhat hilarious story in Slate from a few weeks ago demonstrates how birthday messages on Facebook seem to elicit the same sort of Pavlovian response from people. Continue reading

Violence against children has historically been the least studied area of child injuries. Although previous work on the subject has highlighted the need for more data, services and reforms, the authors indicate that the current agenda remains limited. Therefore, they offer a revised approach which they suggest should focus on four domains: national surveillance, intervention research, legislation and policy, and partnerships and collaboration. Although some progress has been made, and the prevention of violence against children is rising as a public health priority, taking this new approach will be critical in continuing to protect vulnerable children from further injuries and death. The Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit is committed to this important effort and welcomes partnerships in the area of child violence prevention.
